Thoughts on Classic Blue - Pantone 2020 Color of the Year
As you may have seen or heard, Pantone selected Classic Blue for the color of the year in 2020. I find the selection of the color of the year an interesting concept because colors are selected not because they have done something or are “au currant” but because colors can be a vehicle to send a message to the collective consciousness. In a time when collectively we face a level of uncertainty that society hasn’t felt since the 1930’s and WWII, Classic Blue may have something to tell us.
Classic Blue is described as dependable and familiar. It offends no one. It’s popular with children, teenagers, adults, and senior citizens. It’s not deeply associated with any one group, country, movement or historic event. Classic Blue portends a simpler, more predictable world.

For those of you who, like me, were wondering if the blue in the Great American Insurance Group logo is Classic Blue, it’s very close but not the same. Classic Blue’s color code is 19-4052 and is described by Pantone as where sky meets ocean. The letters in our logo are the slightly more vibrant Pantone 0955C, which is the color of the Tardis. We must have some Doctor Who fans in the home office.
