Casualty Actuarial Society’s Reinsurance in the Environmental Insurance Market Virtual Presentation – Mark Vuono

Our Division President, Mark Vuono, had the opportunity to speak on a panel during the Casualty Actuarial Society’s (CAS) Reinsurance Virtual Seminar. Along with Greg Heidemann and Daniel Greer, the group spoke about the history of environmental insurance, the industry’s development over time, available products and services as well as potential exposures for certain classes of business.

The panel dove into the reasons why Commercial General Liability (CGL) insurance policies are often not enough to protect insureds from potential environmental risks due to the pollution exclusion included on almost all GL policies. They also spoke on the history of environmental insurance including the development of key players in the market throughout time. The panel was able to touch on a wide variety of subjects including core businesses for both site-related and services-related coverage options, product offerings, pricing considerations and claims trends.

The participants were highly engaged for the duration of the presentation. Although the presentation was scheduled for 75 minutes, it lasted nearly 95 minutes with over 100 participants throughout the entirety of the presentation. The presentation concluded with a Q&A session where the panel members fielded questions ranging from product and service offering-related inquiries, to COVID-19 responses within the industry, to requests for specific case study examples of success stories.
