2019 Great American Management Meeting

Earlier this month, I had the pleasure of attending Great American’s Insurance Group’s 2019 Annual P&C Management Meeting. The meeting brings together corporate leadership and business unit executives to review the results from the preceding year and to look forward to the rest of 2019 and beyond.

2018 was another great year for Great American Insurance Group’s Property & Casualty Group, with gross written premium of $6.8 billion and a calendar year combined ratio of 93 percent. The $6.8 billion represents a record number for Great American’s P&C Group and the combined ratio figure is an exceptional result given the cat losses the insurance industry experienced in 2018. A few highlights from the meeting included:

  • Adding our 34th specialty business unit–ABA Insurance Services Inc., a market-leading provider of D&O and other complementary insurance solutions for banks, small businesses and nonprofit organizations.
  • Launching an Innovation Council, to help integrate business solutions and foster flexibility and profitability across the various business units.
  • Reaffirming the company’s commitment to attracting, developing and retaining the highest quality insurance professionals.

Not only did Great American overall enjoy a great 2018, the Environmental Division also continued our successful run of delivering sophisticated insurance solutions despite an ever-changing market. Based on our 2018 efforts, we were recognized by senior leadership for our ninth consecutive award in our 10-year history. This was an acknowledgement of the division’s outstanding service and performance.

I also want to thank our dedicated and conscientious staff of environmental insurance professionals. This recognition is a direct reflection of their tireless efforts and a testament to the power of teamwork and perseverance.

Barry is a divisional Senior Vice President and Chief Underwriting Officer for the Great American Environmental Division, leading our Executive Underwriting team. He has been with the Environmental Division for the past ten years. Barry’s prior experience includes serving as contracts counsel with the environmental insurance space as well as working on complex commercial and defense litigation. He is based out of our Exton, PA office.
